Taking Time To Remember

Addressing a crowd of more than 200 Moosic Borough residents and business owners, Rep. Sid Michaels Kavulich said “The time we had with him was so precious.”
He was speaking of the late Mayor John Segilia during a memorial clock dedication ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 13.
“You knew that the time you spent with him wouldn’t be wasted,” he added. “It was so valuable. And every time we pass this memorial clock we will be reminded of him and his dedication to Moosic.”
Segilia died August 11 last year. His political life, including time spent as a councilman and mayor, spanned 29 years. A parishioner of Divine Mercy Parish, he lived in Moosic for 49 years.
His widow Loretta listened as her son James – currently serving the remaining time of his father’s term as mayor – spoke of his father’s dedication to public office.
“This was my father’s second home,” he said. “He was the face of Moosic.”
Riverside School Board president Timothy Lavelle shared fond memories of his time with Segilia, stating that the late mayor was a man of action.
“John was a man of few words,” he said. “He didn’t talk, he did.”
Lavelle’s words were echoed by Lackawanna County Commissioner and Moosic resident Corey O’Brien.
“There’s nobody who epitomized loving Moosic more than John Segilia,” he said to the crowd. “He never tooted his own horn. He got the job done every day. He loved his community and worked tirelessly every day to make sure young and old had an oppertunity to enjoy Moosic as much as he did.”
The memorial clock, a project spearheaded by resident Kathy Boyle, includes the saying “Take Time to Remember Moosic Mayor John Segilia” and the year 1898, the date of the borough’s establishment.
It was funded by private donations and an event called the “Taste of Moosic,” held last February at the Greenwood Hose Co.
Kavulich’s ending thoughts
“Moosic is a better place because of the dedication he had to Moosic Borough and the community,” Kavulich added
